Identifying Sugars

Added sugar is often masqueraded by other names. If you see a name that ends in “ose” you can bet it is a sugar. Read the nutrition labels carefully as food manufacturers are good at hiding the bad stuff.

  • Simple sugars: Glucose, fructose, galactose, lactose, maltose, sucrose.
  • Syrups: Corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, maple syrup, honey, molasses, fruit juice concentrate, malt syrup.
  • Other forms: Brown sugar, cane sugar, raw sugar, powdered sugar, dextrose, crystalline fructose, invert sugar, agave nectar, and others.
